Ruzizi III Energy Limited (REL) is a special purpose vehicle based in Rwanda, focused on developing and operating the 206 MW Ruzizi III Regional Hydropower Project. This project is located on the Ruzizi River, along the border of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and is designed to provide clean, dispatchable baseload power to Rwanda, Burundi, and DRC. It is the first privately financed hydropower project in sub-Saharan Africa that utilizes a shared regional water resource for power export. The Ruzizi III Hydroelectric Power Station operates under a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) model and aims to benefit over 30 million people in a region with low electricity access. The project includes a compact reservoir for daily peak regulation and will supply sustainable electricity to over 300,000 residents. REL also manages the construction and maintenance of the hydropower facility and related infrastructure, contributing to regional energy security and economic growth while adhering to environmental standards.
